The Drowning Hag
Among the most infamous of the water spirits of England is Jenny Greenteeth, a malevolent fairy known for lurking in the dark, stagnant waters, waiting for the unwary to stray too close. She is most often associated with Lancashire, Cheshire, and the Midlands, though similar beings appear in folklore across Britain.
A Fearsome Appearance
Jenny Greenteeth is typically described as an old, withered hag with green skin, long stringy hair, and sharp, jagged teeth. Her long, bony arms reach out from beneath the water’s surface, her fingers tipped with claw-like nails. Her eyes are sunken and hollow, said to glow faintly in the dark. However, like many fae beings, she is not bound to one form – some versions of the tale claim that she can appear beautiful and enchanting, luring her victims close before revealing her true nature.
A Predator of the Unwary
Jenny Greenteeth is most feared for her habit of preying on children, reaching up from the water to drag them below, where they are never seen again. She is said to haunt ponds, slow-moving rivers, and even deep wells, places where the water is still and deceptive. Parents would often warn their children to stay away from murky waters, saying that Jenny Greenteeth was watching and waiting.
Her legend is sometimes linked to the presence of duckweed, the thick green plant that grows over stagnant water. When it covers a pond’s surface, it can make the water appear solid, luring the unsuspecting to step forward – only to find themselves sinking into Jenny Greenteeth’s grasp.
Some say that she feeds on her victims, devouring their flesh before casting their bones into the water below. Others claim she simply delights in dragging souls into the depths, watching them struggle in terror before they vanish forever.
Similar Beings in Folklore
Jenny Greenteeth is not alone in British folklore. Her legend is closely related to Grindylow, a similar water creature found in Yorkshire, and to the Nuckelavee, a monstrous water horse from Scottish mythology. Even the Welsh Cyoerraeth, a deathly wailing spirit, shares similarities with her legend.
Despite her terrifying reputation, some modern interpretations suggest that Jenny Greenteeth represents the dangers of water for the careless – a cautionary tale meant to instill respect for nature’s hidden perils.
