Hermit

    1. Hermit
      Ermite, Hermite

There are several "Hermits" in the Vulgate and below are some from Sommer's list.

      • Hermit
        Who baptises King Label.

      • Hermit
To whom King Mordrain had himself carried.

      • Hermit
The one who was found near the rudder of Mordrain's ship lamenting and moaning about murder and treason.

      • Hermit
A former knight, who had lost twelve sons. He is probably Aliers de Thanningues.

      • Hermit
Near the castle of Leverzerp where Gawain stayed.

      • Hermit
A former knight, the uncle of the damsel who conducts Lancelot and Galeshin to Escalon le Tenebreux.

      • Hermit
With whom Ywain finds his cousin Gawain.

      • Hermit
At whose hermitage Lancelot passes the night before going to le Chastel as Puceles.

      • Hermit
To whom Gawain comes after leaving the Grail castle.

      • Hermit
Who tells Ywain the antecedents of the giant Mauduit.

      • Hermit
Who gives Bohort an account of Lancelot's baptism.

      • Hermit
In the Perilous Forest, at whose house Lancelot and Mordred stay and who tells them that it is beyond them to understand the miracle of the stag and the four lions.

      • Hermit
Where Bohort learnt that Lancelot had passed there.

      • Hermit
Where Lancelot passed a night on his return ride to Camaalot.

      • Hermit
Who finds Lancelot when, in his dementet state, he has followed and killed a wild boar.

      • Hermit
Whom Bohort met carrying the sacrament.

      • Hermit
Whom Lancelot finds and by whom he is blamed for his past sinful life and encouraged to mend his way.

      • Hermit
Who explains to Lancelot that chivalry alone cannot help him, and that all who hope to be successful in the quest of the Grail must be free from sin.

      • Hermit
Whom Lancelot found mourning and lamenting over a dead body.

      • Hermit
Who interprets Lancelot's vision and tells him his only hope is God's mercy.

      • Hermit
Who endeavours to dissuade Lionel from fighting his brother Bohort, and who is killed by him.

      • Hermit
With whom Lancelot stays when he is wounded by one of Arthur's huntsmen.

      • Hermit
In the forest of Nordelonde this hermit christened Gawain, and to whose intercession with God he owes the peculiarity which had been fatal to so many knights.

      • Hermit
Who told Bohort that he would find Lancelot on a certain day at La Joyeuse Garde.

      • Hermit
A hermit priest Perceval encounters in a forest. His companion was named Alecys.

      • Hermit
Who induced Nascien to renounce chivalry and tells him the gospel of Nicodemus.

    2. Hermit de Plaisseis
      Hermite de Plessis

Where Lancelot stayed until he had completely regained his strength.

    3. Hermit King
      Hermit Uncle

In the Fourth Continuation of Chrétien's Perceval, Perceval’s uncle is called Elyas Anaïs. Perceval came across his forest cloister after having failed to ask the Grail Question during his first visit to the Fisher King’s castle. The Hermit King gave Perceval additional information about the Grail and the Grail keepers. The character first appears in Chrétien de Troyes’s Perceval, though he has no name or designation.

There is some confusion as to whether he is Perceval’s maternal uncle (and therefore the brother of the Fisher King) or his paternal uncle (the brother of Alain the Large).

    4. Hermit of the Hedge
      Hermit of the Thicket

A knight-turned-hermit who lived in the Hedged Manor, near the castle Dolorous Guard and the Dolorous Prison.

He gave lodging to Lancelot and Gawain when they came to liberate the Dolorous buildings, and he administered the Extreme Unction to two of Arthur’s knights - Loholt and Galegantin - when they were sick in the Dolorous Prison.

      Extreme Unction
This is another term for one of the seven sacraments - the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick - which is administered both to the dying and to those who are gravely ill or about to undergo a serious operation, for the recovery of their health and for the spiritual strength.

    5. Hermit of the Red Mountain

Gawain visited the Hermit of the Red Mountain during his quest to find Lancelot. He was given directions to the North Wales Causeway - a bridge to Sorelois.

    6. Hermit's Cross

The home of Gais the Large, Perceval's grandfather.

    7. Hermit's Spring
      Fontaine a'Ermite

A fountain where Hector had his armor stolen by a treacherous squire, as part of the Lord of the Fens' plan to capture Hector.

    8. Proud'homme
      'Hermit' | Preudom, Preudomme, Preudons

In Sommer's list of characters from the Vulgate I find hermits under "Preudom, Preudomme, Preudons". I decided to add them to this page instead of creating a separate page.

      • Preudom, Preudomme, Preudons
Who comes to Arthur and warns him that he is on the point of losing all earthly honour.

      • Preudom, Preudomme, Preudons
Dressed in white who Lancelot finds standing in front of a house.

      • Preudom, Preudomme, Preudons
        Who brings Galahad to court.
