Ferryman in the underworld (see Hades). He is an old gruffy man, and his boat is leaky and has been badly knocked about. Only souls that has been burried is allowed to climb on board for transport to the other shore of Styx or Acheron. He wants an 'obol' for the crossing, and this ancient Greek coin was therefore put in the mouth of the dead in old times and such is the custom still, a coin is put under the tounge and the name of the Christian angel of death is still Charon.
