Despite the name, I found no evidence to connect this stronghold with the great enchanter. Conceivably it may have been connected with the minor King Merlan le Dyable, but more likely it was in or near Galehodin’s teritory (in North Wales?), perhaps being one of Galehodin’s own castles.
