Meare Lake

Meare Pool

A lake located in Somerset, England, situated in the village of Meare, which is near the town of Glastonbury. The lake is sometimes referred to as Meare Heath or simply Meare.

A local legend states this is where Arthur received Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake. While some versions place the event at a lake, it is more commonly associated with a different body of water called the Lake of Avalon, which is often linked to Glastonbury. According to some legends, King Arthur’s body was said to have been taken to Avalon for burial after his death.

Meare and the surrounding Somerset Levels have a history of witchcraft and folklore. In local legends, the “Meare Witches” were said to have practiced their craft in the area.
