“Taliesin’s Grave”
North-east of Talybont, on the slopes of Moel-y-Garn, Dyfed, is a caer reputed to contain the remains of Taliesin.
Many of the legends associated with this ancient poet are to be found in the Mabinogion. The barrow consists of a large stone slab and cairn, the other stones having been removed over the years as building materials.
In the nineteenth century an attempt was made to discover the bones of Taliesin, and to remove them for burial in a Christian rather than a pagan site. During the excavation a sudden terrible thunderstorm arose. Lightning struck the ground nearby, and, fleeing for their lives, the men abandoned their tools, never returning to collect them or try again.
