Introduction#

Cyllel Llawfrodedd was a sacred ritual knife belonging to Llawfrodedd the Horseman. It is listed among the legendary Thirteen Treasures of Britain, a collection of magical objects associated with the rulers and heroes of early Britain.

The knife is described as a Druidic sacrificial blade, used in ritual contexts and imbued with supernatural power.

Llawfrodedd the Horseman#

Llawfrodedd appears only in the Treasures list and is otherwise unknown in surviving narrative literature. Like several other owners of the Treasures, he seems to belong to a lost heroic cycle now preserved only through names and objects.

His epithet “the Horseman” suggests a warrior-aristocrat or mounted champion of early British legend.

Significance#

Cyllel Llawfrodedd represents the sacred authority of the druids and the ritual life of early Britain. As a sacrificial blade, it embodies the intersection of kingship, religion, and supernatural power — a reminder that the earliest legendary Britain was shaped not by knights and castles, but by warriors, priests, and gods.
