Introduction#

The Port of the Perilous Rock is a remote and dangerous maritime location appearing in the Grail romances. Once associated with pirates, it later became the site of King Mordrain’s supernatural trial of faith. The location combines themes common to the Grail tradition: isolation, temptation, divine testing, perilous seas, and sacred destiny.

The Trial of King Mordrain#

After his conversion to Christianity, King Mordrain was transported by divine power to the Perilous Rock in order to test his faith and obedience.

There he endured violent storms and the temptations of a fiend, who sought to drive him into despair or force him to abandon the rock. During the ordeal, the storms shattered the rock itself into two parts.

Despite the terror and isolation of the place, Mordrain resisted the temptation to flee and successfully endured the trial.

The Perilous Rock belongs to the wider Arthurian tradition of dangerous maritime threshold locations: enchanted islands, perilous harbors, sacred voyages, and supernatural storms.

Unlike many perilous places associated with combat, the dangers here are spiritual and psychological rather than martial. The sea surrounding the rock reinforces the isolation of the trial, separating Mordrain from ordinary human society and placing him entirely within divine judgment. The breaking of the rock itself reflects the violence of the spiritual forces surrounding the test.

Nascien and the Perilous Port#

The Estoire del Saint Graal recounts that, forty years after Christ’s Passion, Nascien boarded a ship at the Isle of Turnance and was carried to another vessel occupied by King Mordrain.

The text states that Mordrain’s ship had been “tempted full evil with a fiend in the Port of Perilous Rock,” linking the harbor directly with supernatural danger and spiritual testing.

Possible Identifications#

Some interpretations of the geography in the Estoire del Saint Graal have suggested a possible connection with the Rock of Gibraltar, though the descriptions do not correspond precisely.

Other speculation has connected the site with dangerous coastal formations around Britain, including Morte Point in Devonshire, whose name evokes death and peril. No d
