In Chrétien de Troyes’ Cligés, three physicians from Salerno are summoned to examine the apparently dead Empress Fenice. Suspecting that she still lives, they subject her to increasingly harsh treatments in an attempt to revive her.
Their increasingly brutal attempts to revive the empress ultimately provoked the outrage of Fenice’s attendants, who threw the physicans from a window to their deaths.
In The Alliterative Morte Arthure#
The reputation of Salerno’s physicians appears again in the Alliterative Morte Arthure. After King Arthur receives his mortal wounds in his final battle, he is taken to Avalon, where a renowned physician from Salerno is summoned to treat him. Despite the physician’s celebrated skill, Arthur’s injuries prove beyond healing, underscoring the inevitability of the king’s death.
The episode reflects the medieval belief that physicians trained at Salerno represented the highest standard of medical knowledge, while also emphasizing that even the greatest earthly medicine could not alter Arthur’s fate.
