Introduction#

Rhygenydd is a figure in Welsh tradition whose crock and dish are counted among the Thirteen Treasures of the Island of Britain. The vessel possessed the miraculous ability to provide whatever food its owner desired.

The Crock and Dish of Rhygenydd#

Rhygenydd’s vessel is described as a crock or dish capable of producing and kind of food requested by its rightful owner.

Like several of the Thirteen Treasures, it combines hospitality with supernatural abundance.

The object belongs to a wider Celtic and Arthurian tradition of miraculous containers that never fail in nourishment.

Connection to the Grail Tradition#

Because of its power to provide food endlessly, some scholars have compared Rhygenydd’s dish with the Holy Grail and other magical vessels of Celtic tradition.

Similar motifs appear in the cauldrons of Celtic mythology, the Grail procession romances, and other miraculous Arthurian treasures associated with sustenance and renewal.

However, the dish itself is not identified as the Grail in medieval tradition.

The Thirteen Treasures of Britain#

Rhygenydd’s dish forms part of the legendary Thirteen Treasures of the Island of Britain, a collection of magical objects preserved in Welsh tradition.

The ability to provide endless food places it among the most life-sustaining of the Thirteen Treasures.
